Built on the inside slope of the Mitsikeli mountain, the mountain defining Zagori’s western border, Elati is an evergreen village, surrounded by lush forests.

Built in the 1620s, by a group of shepherds, its inhabitants took advantage of the rich fauna to become timber merchants.

The schools and mansions of the village, dating from the 1800s are a testament to the wealth brought by this new economic activity - as were the constant raids by bandits.
