Megalo Papigo, in western Zagori.
Zagori, or Zagorochoria, is a group of stone villages on the western slopes of the Pindus mountains in Epirus. Cobbled paths, arched bridges and a plane-tree square in each village shaped a landscape that UNESCO inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2023. The Vikos Gorge, the Voidomatis river and the Tymfi mountain are within reach of the same villages.
ZEN Zagori is built around one idea: to travel here without stress. We give you distances and times from Ioannina, honest hiking estimates, indicative prices with dates, and a clear view of what is not yet verified.

Open the tool (in Greek) →Zagori is easiest by car. The villages sit between about 25 and 80 km from Ioannina, and the usual bases (Monodendri, Kipoi, Aristi and Papigo) are 36 to 60 km away, roughly 50 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes by road without traffic. Ioannina airport is about 34 km from Monodendri. Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for walking, summer is for the river and the rock pools, and winter brings snow, so allow extra time and carry chains from December to March. Distances here are road estimates from OpenStreetMap, not official figures.
We compare public sources, give ranges when they disagree, date every price and mark what we could not verify. We do not accept advertising, and we do not present AI-generated images as photographs of real places. Photographs come from Wikimedia Commons, with the author and licence shown on each image.
Most visitors base themselves in one or two villages and use Ioannina as the gateway. The villages are 25 to 80 kilometres from the city by road (the usual bases are 36 to 60), and the drives are slow because of the bends. Our overview of Zagori explains the landscape and the numbers, with the list of the 20 villages in the UNESCO core and distances from Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras.
For hiking, the Vikos Gorge is the classic day, and the Kolymbithres rock pools and the viewpoints at Oxia and Beloi are shorter options. Our Vikos Gorge guide explains the route, the time it takes, where to find water and how to get back. In summer, the summer guide adds rafting on the Voidomatis and ideas for hot afternoons.
We give ranges when sources disagree, and we mark estimates. Prices are indicative and dated, and hiking times come from guides, map publishers and the Vikos-Aoos Geopark. If you notice a mistake, tell us and we will correct it.
