What Zagori is

Zagori, known in Greek as Zagorochoria or Zagorohoria, is a region of the Pindus mountains in Epirus, in north-west Greece. Small stone villages sit along the western slopes of the northern Pindus, around central squares with a plane tree, and are linked by cobbled paths and stone-arched bridges. The area includes the Vikos Gorge and the Vikos-Aoos National Park, established in 1973, and it is part of the Vikos-Aoos Global Geopark.

Names can be confusing. “Zagori” is also the name of a Greek mineral water brand and of a mountain running race, so searching for the place usually works better with “Zagorochoria” or “Zagori villages”.

Why UNESCO listed the Zagori Cultural Landscape

The World Heritage Committee inscribed the Zagori Cultural Landscape in 2023, at its 45th session, under criterion (v). In its statement, UNESCO describes a rural landscape where small villages extend along the western slopes of the northern Pindus, shaped in the 18th and 19th centuries by remittances sent home by emigrants. Zagorisians worked in the Balkans, Central Europe, Russia, Asia Minor and Constantinople, and the money they sent funded houses, schools, fountains, churches and bridges.

The result is a network of stone-arched bridges, cobbled paths and staircases that linked the villages and worked as a political and social unit, mainly around the Voidomatis river basin. The villages follow a similar pattern: a central square with a plane tree, a community focus for gatherings and religious events, and drystone cobbled paths adapted to the mountain terrain. The architecture is limestone masonry, which UNESCO notes has become vulnerable because of social and environmental pressures.

The numbers, stated carefully

Figures about Zagori differ between sources, so here is what the UNESCO documents say:

  • The property and its buffer zone contain 45 traditional villages.
  • The inscribed property itself covers 20 of them, in three municipal units of the present Municipality of Zagori: Central Zagori, Tymphi and Papigo.
  • The property covers 41,109 hectares and the buffer zone 58,046 hectares, according to the ICOMOS evaluation.
  • Many guides say 46 villages, the commonly cited number of settlements in the area.

The 20 core villages are, in Central Zagori: Aristi, Ano Pedina, Kato Pedina, Dikorfo, Dilofo, Elafotopos, Elati, Monodendri, Vikos and Vitsa. In Tymphi: Fragades, Kapesovo, Koukouli, Kipoi, Negades, Skamneli, Tsepelovo and Vradeto. In Papigo: Papigo and Mikro Papigo.

What to see

Monodendri and the Vikos Gorge. Monodendri is the usual starting point for the classic Vikos Gorge hike. Read our Vikos Gorge hike guide for the route, the time needed and the best season.

The stone bridges. Around Kipoi and Koukouli you find some of the best-known bridges, including the single-arched Kokkoros (Noutsos) bridge, about 24 m long and 13 m high and built in 1750, and the three-arched Plakidas (Kalogeriko) bridge near Kipoi, rebuilt in stone in 1814.

Papigo and the Tymfi mountain. Mikro Papigo is the start of the walk to the Kolymbithres rock pools and of longer mountain routes towards Astraka and the Dragon Lake.

The Voidomatis river. The river forms at the end of the Vikos Gorge and offers easy rafting at grade 2 of 6.

When to go

Spring and early summer suit hiking and rafting. Autumn brings colour and quieter trails. Winter is a classic fireplace-and-snow destination, but you should carry snow chains from December to March and ask your guesthouse about road conditions. See the summer guide for warm-weather ideas.

How to get there

The gateway is Ioannina. By road it is about 411 km from Athens, about 261 km from Thessaloniki and about 217 km from Patras (no-traffic route estimates). From the centre of Ioannina the villages are roughly 25 to 80 km away (the usual bases are 36 to 60 km), for example Kipoi about 37 km, Monodendri about 38 km, Aristi about 50 km and Papigo about 60 km. There are also flights between Athens and Ioannina of about 1 hour 15 minutes. Once in Zagori, a car is the practical choice. For villages, distances and where to stay, our Greek guides cover each village in detail, starting with the list of Zagori villages with distances.

This guide is independent. It is not connected to the Zagori Excellence Network (ZEN, 2013), after which the domain was named, or to the Municipality of Zagori.
