Why summer works in Zagori

In summer the mountain villages of Zagori offer water, shade and long days. The main attractions are all outdoors: a crossing of the Vikos Gorge, rafting on the Voidomatis river, a swim in cold rock pools near Papigo and short walks to viewpoints and stone bridges. The Vikos-Aoos Geopark recommends visiting the gorge from April to November, and many guides see June to October as the most reliable months for the full crossing.

The Vikos Gorge crossing

The classic hike goes from Monodendri down to the river bed and out to Vikos village. Guides give five to seven hours, and the route is not a loop, so you need a taxi back. Start early, carry plenty of water and refill at the Voidomatis springs, and do not start after heavy rain. All details are in our Vikos Gorge hike guide.

Rafting on the Voidomatis

The Voidomatis river forms below the gorge, and rafting here is easy: grade 2 of 6, a course of about 6.7 km and about three hours including the briefing. Trekking Hellas in Ioannina runs it all year, with meetings at 10:00 and 14:00, from about 45 euros per person and at least two participants, with equipment, transport, guides and liability insurance included (as of 7 October 2026). The minimum age quoted for summer is four. Prices are set by the operator and are indicative.

The Kolymbithres rock pools

Between Megalo and Mikro Papigo, about 1 km before the entrance to Mikro Papigo, a path of about 900 m (measured from the Mikro Papigo square) leads down to a chain of natural rock pools, two to three metres deep. Guides give 20 to 25 minutes down and 30 to 35 back up, with about 80 m to climb on the way back. The water comes from springs and is very cold, roughly 12 to 16 degrees in July and August. The stones are slippery, so wear shoes with good grip. See the full guide to the Kolymbithres (in Greek).

Short walks for a hot afternoon

For a lighter day, the Oxia viewpoint is about 2.8 km north of Monodendri, and the Beloi viewpoint above Vradeto is a short flat walk from the parking area, roughly 2 to 2.8 km return and one to one and a half hours. The stone bridges around Kipoi can be walked in a morning, and the shade and the water make them a calm choice.

Getting around in summer

The villages lie between roughly 37 and 60 km from Ioannina, which is about 50 to 75 minutes by road depending on the village, so a day trip from the city is realistic but tiring in the heat. Staying in the villages saves the drive and lets you start walks early. Roads between the villages are narrow and winding, so allow extra time and do not plan back-to-back stops. Our map shows the road distance from Ioannina to every village, and the cost calculator uses the same figures.

Practical summer tips

  • Book early. Summer and August holidays are busy, and the small guesthouses fill up. Car hire is also much more expensive in July and August than in winter, according to aggregator averages.
  • Start early. Mornings are cooler and quieter at the best-known places.
  • Carry water. On long walks do not count on a single source.
  • Watch the weather. Mountain storms can change the river and trails quickly.
  • Respect the landscape. Take rubbish with you and stay on paths. The villages and bridges are part of a protected cultural landscape.
