Vikos Gorge hike: route, duration, best season and the way back
The classic crossing runs from Monodendri down to the river bed and out to Vikos village. Plan five to seven hours and arrange your return before you start.

What the Vikos Gorge is
The Vikos Gorge is the best-known natural landmark of Zagori, a group of stone villages in the Pindus mountains of Epirus, north-west Greece. It lies inside the Vikos-Aoos National Park, established in 1973, and it feeds the Voidomatis river. The villages of Monodendri and Vikos, which mark the two ends of the classic hike, are among the twenty villages of the Zagori Cultural Landscape, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023.
The gorge is also old human ground: the ICOMOS evaluation for UNESCO mentions traces of habitation at the Klithi rock shelter near the mouth of the Voidomatis gorge from about 20,000 years ago.
Vikos Gorge hike: three ways to see it
You do not have to cross the whole gorge to see it.
A short walk with a view (20 minutes to 1.5 hours). The Oxia viewpoint is about 2.8 km north of Monodendri, according to travel guides and OpenStreetMap. The Beloi viewpoint, above the village of Vradeto, needs a parking stop and a flat walk to the edge. Guides give roughly 2 to 2.8 km return and 1 to 1.5 hours.
Down to the water and back (3 to 5 hours). From Monodendri a stepped path leads to the river bed in roughly 45 minutes. You can go down, spend time at the bottom and climb back. The climb takes longer than most people expect.
The full Vikos Gorge hike (5 to 7 hours). The classic crossing starts at Monodendri, passes the Voidomatis springs and ends in Vikos village. With extra time it can continue to Mikro Papigo.
The route in five parts
- Monodendri, the descent. A steep stepped path with tight bends takes you to the bottom in about 45 minutes. It is the hardest part on the knees, so trekking poles help.
- The river bed. The path becomes gentler and follows the often dry bed under plane and maple trees, with cliffs hundreds of metres high on both sides.
- Mid-route rest. Water and shade are available around the middle of the route. Do not rely on a single source, because the flow changes with the season.
- The Voidomatis springs. The Voidomatis springs lie near the lower end of the gorge, with very cold clear water, and are a good place to stop and refill. Do not count on them for the earlier stretch: the one reliable water point mid-route is a single spring, so carry enough from the start.
- The climb to Vikos village. The last ascent takes roughly one hour. The taxi waits here, or you continue to Mikro Papigo if you planned extra time.
How long it takes and how hard it is
Figures in circulation differ, and it is worth knowing before you trust any single number. The map publisher Anavasi describes a canyon of about 20 km length and about 800 m depth, with a crossing time of 5 to 6 hours, while the Vikos-Aoos Geopark gives 6 to 7 hours for the Monodendri to Vikos route. Other guides give about 12 km of walkable gorge and more than 1,000 m depth. The differences depend on where the gorge is measured and which section is called walkable, so we show ranges and not one official figure.
Guides state that Monodendri sits at roughly 1,060 m and Vikos village at roughly 770 m, which means a long descent first and a climb at the end. That, together with the length, is why the hike is called moderate to demanding.
When to go
The Geopark recommends visiting from April to November. Many guides consider June to October the safest. In winter the weather can make the route unsuitable. If it has rained hard before your day, or the forecast shows storms, postpone: a dry river bed can change quickly.
What to carry
- Shoes with good grip and a closed toe.
- Water for at least half the route, even though you pass the springs.
- Trekking poles for the descent.
- Food and a warm or wind-proof layer, because the bottom of the gorge is cool even in summer.
- A charged phone, and tell someone when you expect to finish.
Getting back to your car
The crossing is not a loop. By road, Vikos village is about 23 km and 45 minutes from Monodendri (a route estimate without traffic). The usual solution is to leave the car in Monodendri and take a taxi back from Vikos, booked in advance through your guesthouse. If you stay near Papigo, plan the crossing towards Vikos and arrange transport from there.
Combine the hike with the rest of Zagori
A day in the gorge usually leaves room for a gentler second day. The stone bridges around Kipoi take half a day on easy paths, and rafting on the Voidomatis is an easy option at grade 2 of 6, about 6.7 km and around three hours with preparation. Trekking Hellas in Ioannina offers it year-round from about 45 euros per person with at least two participants (operator price as of 7 October 2026, indicative). FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Vikos Gorge hike take?
Sources differ: the map publisher Anavasi speaks of 5 to 6 hours, the Vikos-Aoos Geopark of 6 to 7. Plan 5 to 7 hours of walking from Monodendri to Vikos village, plus stops.
What is the best time for the Vikos Gorge hike?
The Geopark recommends visiting from April to November. Many guides give June to October as the safest dry months. Winter and periods after heavy rain are not recommended.
Is the Vikos Gorge hike difficult?
It is usually described as moderate to demanding because of the length and the descent and climb, not because of technical sections. If you are not used to long hikes with a substantial descent and climb, start with the Oxia or Beloi viewpoints. Decide whether to enter the gorge before descending, allow for the climb back, and consult a local guide if unsure.
Where can I find water on the Vikos Gorge trail?
There is one spring around the middle of the route (Klima), with the Voidomatis springs near the end. Flow varies by season; carry enough water from the start and do not rely solely on the springs.
How do I get back to my car?
The route is linear. Vikos village is about 23 km and 45 minutes by road from Monodendri (a no-traffic route estimate). Most hikers arrange a taxi in advance.
How deep is the Vikos Gorge?
Figures vary. The map publisher Anavasi describes about 800 m depth and 20 km length, other guides give more than 1,000 m depth and about 12 km of walkable canyon. The claim that it is the deepest canyon in the world in proportion to its width is often repeated but contested.
Can children do the Vikos Gorge hike?
The full crossing is not recommended for young children. For families, the Beloi viewpoint near Vradeto is a short flat walk of roughly 2 to 2.8 km return, and the Oxia viewpoint is about 2.8 km north of Monodendri.
